Family Life

What Katy Did!

Ever wondered what ecstatic looks like?

Ever wondered what shocked looks like?

Ever wondered what “overcome with emotion” looks like?

This my friend… THIS!

Yup – this years Brilliance in Blogging “BiB” Award for Fresh Voice at Britmums Live came to ME! *runs around naked!  Thanks so much for voting me to the shortlist in the first place.  I’m still in complete shock the judges voted for me – and yes, still as excited as I look in this pic!

The others on the list were all amazing bloggers – shout out to all of them for their brilliance and their wonderful blogs!  I feel like we all achieved the impossible just by making it to the shortlist. So hugs to you … Adventures of Adam, Beautiful Misbehaviour, Hurrah for Gin, Sisterhood (and all that) and The Intrepid Misadventurer.

FINALSince I was hosting the awards, I read the fact that our category had been put to the end of the ceremony as a bad sign. I even sat down in the audience while the category was announced – I was so sure someone else would win.  I guess watching Graham Norton as Bafta Host, where he was nominated for two awards and walked away with nothing, didn’t help!

And then it happened.  “And the winner is….. KATY HILL”!

Shocked? … Check

Overwhelmed? … Check

Unable to control the blubbing? … Call me Gwynnie and take me home baby!

And home is where my award already has pride of place by my favourite, quirky old window! I walk past it the whole time and it makes me smile!

I had the best weekend with some amazing and powerful bloggers and inspirational speakers in the shape of Emma Freud and Benjamin Brooks-Dutton. I feel humbled, inspired and proud in equal measure.

And now, back to normal life.  And during this mornings Multi-Circuit class at the gym, something HIT me!

Lovely though the winning is, it’s truly not all about that. As  I was saying in my last post, it’s all about running your own race.  During the class, it’s impossible not to look around and compare what everyone else is lifting with what you are (and then I usually raise my game and hurt myself!).

In life, it’s so easy to judge ourselves by those around us,but we have to learn not to.  The minute you get TOO caught up with what everyone else is doing, you don’t do YOUR best!

Do those things necessary to bring forth your personal best and don’t lose sleep worrying about the competition. John Wooden

And that’s the thing with Britmums Live.

Some went home a winner because they won an award.

Some went home a winner because they made amazing new friendships.

Some went home a winner because they faced their fear and got themselves through the door in the first place (yup – those events can be totally overwhelming!)

It’s all about your OWN victory and running your own race.

Thanks Britmums Live for a phenomenal few days!  It was so great to catch up with blogging friends, share stories and learn new tricks!  And thanks to  the gorgeous people I met for making the time (and my win) so special.  Here are just a few of them …

K x

Huge congrats Katy – twas a great evening and you did a fab job of hosting it all. People will always have pre-conceptions, heaven knows for some reason there are some people who think all bloggers sit in their PJs eating icecream of an evening *ahem*. you are one of the most down to earth people I know and I loves ya x

    • Katy 27/06/2014 at 1:08 pm

Ah – thanks lady! It was a HUGE evening for blogging! Hence dressing as if I was hosting some major awards. I WAS! And to win just blew me away. Still on a complete high! Xx

Hi Katy i just found your post as i saw a few clicks come through from your site – thanks for the mention!
Well done on the win too, I would have liked to say hello last weekend but you always seemed to be surrounded by people when i saw you. Maybe next time 🙂 x
p.s thanks for your comment on my blog as well, only just spotted that too – very behind on my blogmin!

  • Mary @ Over 40 and a Mum to One 25/06/2014 at 9:15 pm

Well done you and yes you’re right, we must all follow our own path. It’s lovely to see what everyone else is doing, but not always easy to keep a focus on what’s really important to you. You did a great job hosting the awards, yes your winners speech made me cry. but it was lovely that you felt able to be you enough, if front of all of us, to have a cry too. See you next year 🙂

    • Katy 26/06/2014 at 9:31 am

Thanks Mary! Every day I see my award it makes me smile! And sorry I made you cry! xx

  • Suzanne 25/06/2014 at 1:40 pm

Ah I didn’t speak to you this weekend cos I suppose I was a little in awe. Stupid, I know. And I’ll be honest, I was also rooting for a couple of my faves in that Fresh Voice category – there was so many amazing blogs in there! But the truth is, I hadn’t read your blog (I’m ashamed to admit) and had decided you won because you’re famous (sorry!). But now I’ve taken some time out to read your words and you’re funny, proper funny. And you’re honest and down to earth. A great blog and you deserved to win. Well done to you x x

    • Katy 25/06/2014 at 2:17 pm

Thanks so much for your honesty Suzanne! Maybe you could amend your blog? To be honest, attitudes have proved that I have to actually work HARDER than anyone else, since I have the only blog people come to with pre-conceptions of what they’ll find. So I now feel EVEN BETTER about my win! Ironically there were professional journalists, people who work in marketing, people in computing and professional photographers shortlisted who’s “expertise” I WOULD have thought an advantage. My blog is all about my life and supporting women – which now feels more than a tad ironic. Thanks so much for dropping by. I really appreciate it. And please come and say hello next time x

  • Clare Goldsack 25/06/2014 at 12:52 pm

Thank you SO much Clare! That’s really kind of you! Yeah, it’s been a slog, but worth it! x

  • Michelle @ Bod for tea 25/06/2014 at 12:46 pm

Huge congratulations on the award – your face was certainly a picture when you realised you’d won! Was a bit concerned at first read that something really HAD hit you in circuit class though… *phew*

    • Katy 25/06/2014 at 2:18 pm

Haha! Sorry if I alarmed you! And thanks so much xx

  • Emma Edwards (Adventures of Adam) 25/06/2014 at 9:04 am

Huge congratulations for winning the Fresh Voice BiBs. I was extremely proud to be a finalist with you.

Your speech afterwards touched me. It shows that no matter who you are or what you do we all have insecurities and will do anything for our children. I too lost a bit of me during pregnancy. I suffer from PTSD after a difficult Hyperemesis Gravidarum pregnancy but my blog has become my voice to help others.

I’m so glad you took my” b**ch” comment in jest after the awards and that I got a chance to meet you.

We are all winners for making the leap into the world of blogging and for making a difference to those around us.

    • Katy 25/06/2014 at 11:13 am

Thankyou SO much Emma. And I took you “bitch” comment in exactly the same way as I hope you took my jokes about the other finalists in the awards. AS JOKES! 😉 We all know the mammoth effort it took to reach those finals! Everyone cajoled their Facebook friends to reach the finals, nothing that could be done after that! I’m still in shock! Me and my little blog. Who knew?! Lovely meeting you See you again one day x

  • Vicky@Acupcakemum 24/06/2014 at 9:01 pm

  • Kanchan@ The Intrepid Misadventurer 24/06/2014 at 5:38 pm

Well done on winning! You deserved it and I’m really happy for you (I AM!:-)) I think the most important aspect of blogging is finding your feet and making sense of the life (and skin) you’re in! I’m glad I made it to BML, met some lovely women and realised we’re all on the same journey..Glad I got to chat with you, you’re lovely! 🙂 x

    • Katy 24/06/2014 at 9:12 pm

It was really kind of you to come and say hi. Totally thought it would be going YOUR way as I love your blog! And you’re right – we are on the same journey! Thanks for your lovely words x

  • Rachael 24/06/2014 at 5:22 pm

    Well done Katy, well deserved.
I loved your hosting, you were warm, funny, and happy all the way through. You’re one of those “I want to be her friend” people.
Glad you had a great BritMums Live. Will try and be brave enough to say hi to you next time. x

    • Katy 24/06/2014 at 9:10 pm

Thanks so much. You can be my friend anyway! x

  • My Two Mums 24/06/2014 at 3:07 pm

Congratulations. I remember offering you congratulations on the night and then telling you we didn’t win our category, but it was such a fun night and the winner was so deserved. I went home a winner, for being involved in something that brings people from different backgrounds and voices, into one place.

    • Katy 24/06/2014 at 9:09 pm

Absolutely you did! And I also love what a mixed bunch of people there were, and all those varied voices x

  • Mum of One 24/06/2014 at 1:52 pm

HUGE congrats on your win Katy! I wish I could have been their to celebrate. Hopefully I will make it to next years Britmums and finally be able to say hello 🙂

Thanks so much! Celebrating is always fun 😉 x

  • Louise @ Birds and Lilies 24/06/2014 at 1:08 pm

Congratulations Katy! You are so right; that is exactly what I keep doing at the moment with blogging, I keep comparing myself to everyone else and wishing I was better at blogging but that doesn’t help at all. Thanks for the reminder and well done! xx

    • Katy 24/06/2014 at 9:08 pm

      Thanks so much! xx

  • Carolin 24/06/2014 at 12:35 pm

Congratulations! I’m beyond gutted that I missed this acceptance speech! I bet it had it all 😉

PS: Did you end up doing a little wee? 😀

    • Katy 24/06/2014 at 9:07 pm

Amazingly not! And thanks – there were certainly tears! x

  • Kate on Thin Ice 24/06/2014 at 11:59 am

I was thrilled when you won and also love a lot of the others on the list. You had me in tears when you spoke. I really empathised on what you had to say.
This is a great post. Agree with you on the own race front (mine equals 2011 – bottle going, 2012 – surprise myself by pulling off speaking and make a new friend, 2013 realise I can manage a room but also how sad it is to not return to tell my lovely late dad all about it, 2014 – best yet, feeling more confident and settled and able to help others not to mention finding that certain jacket buddy.
Oh and I love your very quirky window – right up my street.
Keep doing what you are doing

    • Katy 24/06/2014 at 9:06 pm

You’re a darling – thank you SO much! And congratulations on 2014! Lovely jacket by the way! 😉 x

  • TheBoyandMe 24/06/2014 at 11:26 am

Hurray, I’m so pleased you won! And as you said in your acceptance speech, finding your own voice and your place in the world through blogging and after becoming a mummy is a powerful thing. I wish I’d had the guts to speak to you, (I was that person in the toilets before the awards rinsing their mouth with Corsodyl due to a wisdom tooth extraction) but I won my own battle by going to Britmums by myself this year.

    I may have just overshared.

    • Katy 24/06/2014 at 9:05 pm

I’m ALL about the oversharing! Next time! x

  • Mummy Barrow 24/06/2014 at 10:15 am

And some went home wishing their BFF could come with them and carry on making tea for them and delivering it to them.

And some went home still thanking their BFF for arriving before that friend was about to their talk and saying “I have stolen some chocolate from Butlins for you, you need a sugar hit”.

    Love your Mrs Farley.

    • Katy 24/06/2014 at 9:04 pm

You know I’m ALWAYS there to make you a cuppa! And blag you chocolate then eat it MYSELF – apparently! 😉 x

  • Pinkoddy 24/06/2014 at 10:14 am

I was so pleased for you – congratulations again!
